SNGN ROMGAZ SA natural gas production dates to 1909 when Sărmășel natural gas reservoir was discovered, while drilling a well in the Transylvanian Basin, in Mures county. This led to the gradual development and diversification of what is today ROMGAZ natural gas production infrastructure. The first natural gas production was in 1913 (113,000 cm), and it was used locally for the steam boilers at Sărmășel well site.

During the following years a unique infrastructure began to develop in Europe for natural gas production, transmission and commercial supply, for households and industrial use: lightning, heating, methanol, sodium carbonate and carbon black production.

Currently, SNGN ROMGAZ SA operates an extensive and highly complex infrastructure throughout the country, ranging from wells for hydrocarbon production to facilities and equipment for the collection, transmission, compression, conditioning, and measuring the volumes of gas produced from over 120 commercial reservoirs held under concession by the company.

To produce these reservoirs, SNGN ROMGAZ SA uses classic and modern technologies supporting the strategic production objectives, namely:

  • Keeping the annual decline in production under 2,5%;
  • maximizing the recovery factor of hydrocarbon reserves;
  • increasing the technical and economic efficiency of reservoir exploitation;
  • improving safety, security, reliability, and sustainability throughout the entire production process.

Natural gas production is carried out in three production branches with headquarters in Mediaş, Târgu Mureş and Buzău. These branches are organizational units without legal personality, with limited autonomy, established by General Meeting of Shareholders approval, and in compliance with SNGN ROMGAZ SA Articles of Incorporation and the applicable legal regulations, for easy operation of specific activities in the territory.

For operational purposes the branches consist of organization units (gas production units, gas compression units, workshops, teams) in localities throughout the country where commercial reservoirs are in production, as follows:
